CHALLENGES TO THEORISING DIVERSITY

CONCEPTUALISING RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY WHILST SWIMMING IN IT IN THE 21ST CENTURY

What we think, the images we use to envisage and describe shape what we will see. The role of theory should be to open our eyes to what is happening, to help to frame research questions and to integrate masses of findings into some coherent frame to foster the next round of research which continues the iterative process. Too often theory is seen as some abstruse activity carried on without reference to evidence, or is simply a cute heuristic device which grabs attention but fails to do the work of theory.

This webinar will raise these issues, examine several examples of theory and mention a few promising contributions. Participants will be refreshed in critical reading of theory and research. There will be ample opportunity for discussion along the way.

Speaker: Emeritus Professor, The Rev’d Gary D Bouma AM from Monash University

The speaker and moderators are based in Melbourne and Sydney. The program will be held according to Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT).

Readings will be provided upon registration.
