Combine your Bachelor of Islamic Studies with a Master of Teaching (Secondary) to fast track your teaching  career

Bachelor of Islamic Studies

Enrol in the Bachelor of Islamic Studies with CISAC. Consult your course director on which subjects to enrol in.

Select your Teaching Areas

Select an area of teaching and choose electives from your Bachelor of Islamic Studies accordingly.

Master of Teaching (secondary)

After completing the Bachelor of Islamic Studies enrol into the Master of Teaching (Secondary) via School of Education, CSU.

HOW IT WORKS

Step 1

Enrol into Bachelor of Islamic Studies (through Centre of Islamic Studies and Civilisation, CISAC CSU)

Step 2

Speak with Course Director about teaching areas (see below for possible ideas)

Step 3

Complete Bachelor of Islamic Studies (keeping in mind your teaching areas)

Step 4

Enrol into Master of Teaching (through School of Education, CSU)

First Teaching Areas (FTA)

Students must have at least one First Teaching Area (FTA) to enter the Master of Teaching (Secondary). It is common to have one First Teaching Area (FTA) and one Second Teaching Area (FTA). 

FTA = 6 relevant subjects in one area
STA = 4 relevant subjects in one area

For an FTA in LOTE: Arabic Language choose 2 Arabic as electives in addition to the 4 Arabic electives:

  • ISL441 Arabic Skills 1                                                 
  • ISL442 Arabic Skills 2                                     
  • ISL443 Arabic Skills 3                                     
  • ISL460 Introduction to Arabic Reading                      
  • ISL461 Beginner Arabic Language 1                          
  • ISL462 Beginner Arabic Language 2                          

For an FTA in Society and Culture, choose the following Islamic studies electives:

  • ISL151 Islam in the Modern World
  • ISL282 History of Prophets
  • ISL313 Islamic Family Law
  • ISL353 World Religions in Australia
  • ISL355 Women in Islam and Islamic Cultures.

Also choose the following subject as an elective:

  • SOC101 Introductory Sociology

 For an FTA in Studies of Religion choose the following Islamic Studies electives:

  • ISL100 Islamic Worldview and Faith Essentials (core subject)
  • ISL151 Islam in the Modern World
  • ISL282 History of Prophets
  • ISL312 Religious Service and Community Leadership
  • ISL353 World Religions in Australia
  • ISL383 Islamic History and Civilisations

 For FTA in Ancient History choose the following Islamic Studies electives:

  • ISL181 Sirah (Life of Prophet Muhammad)
  • ISL282 History of Prophets
  • ISL383 Islamic History and Civilisations

Also choose 3 Ancient History subjects in consultation with the Course Director.

Second Teaching Area (STA)

If a student wishes to teach in another subject area, the following guide can assist your elective subject selection within the Bachelor of Islamic Studies:

For an STA in Maths choose:

  • MTH101 Computer Aided Mathematics 1
  • MTH102 Computer Aided Mathematics 2
  • MTH218 Multivariable CalculusPick El
  • MTH220 Ordinary Differential Equations.

For an FTA, enrol in the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) and add MTH307 Mathematical Modelling and MTH328 Complex Analysis. Student can then apply to transfer into the Master of Teaching (Secondary).

For an STA in English choose:

  • LIT107 English Literature 1
  • Any two subjects from LIT2xx
  • LIT303 the English Novel from Austen to Lawrence.

For an FTA, enrol in the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) and add one subject from LIT2xx and one from LIT3xx.  Student can then apply to transfer into the Master of Teaching (Secondary).

For an STA in Business Studies (Society and Environment) choose:

  • ACC100 Accounting 1
  • ECO130 Business Economics
  • FIN230 Financial Institutions and Markets
  • MGT220 eCommerce

For an FTA, enrol in Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) and add MGT310 Operations Management, and MKT303 Social and Environmental Marketing. Student can then apply to transfer into the Master of Teaching (Secondary).

For an STA in both Physics and Chemistry (Science) choose:

  • PHY102 Electricity and Waves
  • CHM102 Chemistry 1A
  • PHY216 Modern Physics
  • CHM209 Environmental Chemistry or CHM219 Organic and Physical Chemistry.

An FTA in Science is harder to obtain, please contact the relevant Course Director.
